THEORIES OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE
(ARC 60704)

MR. KOH JING HAO | MR. NICHOLAS NG

This module Is basically about the history of Asian architecture, focusing on three key themes: sustainability, tradition and modernity & globalisation. By the end of the module, students are able to understand and interpret Asian architecture and urbanism through weekly lectures and projects.

Project 1

Reading the Context of Traditional Street

In this project, we are required to study the physical and non-physical contexts of a traditional street, where I chose Jalan Tun HS Lee. We need to conduct a virtual visit and identify different aspects that construct the place identity.

Outcome:

8 pages of sketches of the physical and non-physical contexts of the street.

Reflection

Through this project, I have learned more about the traditional aspects of this street that I didn’t realised before and the importance to preserve these aspects in the midst of rapid development and modernisation. It was interesting and fun learning through simple analysis and sketches. To improve, I'll need to further develop my skills in researching and analysing.

Assignment

Infographic

In this assignment, we need to produce an infographic of the vernacular and traditional architecture that we’ve learned in the past lectures. Contents like building typology, spatial layout and the construction of the building have to be include.

Outcome

One A3 landscape infographic

Reflection

I was able to reinforce and enhance my knowledge learnt during the lecture, particularly in this topic during the research process. Although I did not spend much time on this assignment as we're focusing more on the final research project, but I managed to produce an overall satisfied piece of work. Lastly, I would like to research more on the architecture in Southeast Asia as I think it is really an interesting topic and there are surely more that I can learn.

Project 2

Research in Asian Architecture

In a group of 6, we are required to identify and determine a significant issue in Jalan Tokong - Jalan Tukang Besi by conducting extensive research. Our main direction is sustainable heritage tourism focusing on the preservation of heritage sites and quality of tourists’ experience. Findings are presented in our topic proposal, and later in the final research poster and video presentation.

Outcome:

An A1 research poster and a 10 minutes video presentation

TOA - PROJECT II.png

Reflection

It was quite challenging to undergo this research at first as we could only find limited information. However, we still managed to conduct our research and successfully produce our poster. Through this project, I acquired the skills of researching that I believe I can improve more in the future projects.
